Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) researchers have developed the Never Ending Image Learner (NEIL), software that searches the Web for images, attempting to understand them on its own and, as it builds a visual database, develop common sense. The researchers say NEIL utilizes recent advances in computer-vision technology that enables it to identify and label objects in images, to characterize scenes, and to recognize aspects such as colors, lighting, and materials. They say the data NEIL generates will further enhance the ability of computers to understand the visual world. NEIL also makes associations between the objects to obtain common sense information that humans often take for granted.
