Researchers on the European Union's decade-long Human Brain Project (HBP) recently disclosed how far they have come toward the goal of creating an artificial brain by 2023 at the annual HBP Summit in Germany. The project's goal is the initial simulation of the human brain on supercomputers, and then the precise replication of its functions via a hardware emulator. The long-term objective is the construction of artificial brains that can outperform traditional von Neuman supercomputers at far less cost.
