Hi Gowri,

There are no limits on what can be requested for any XSEDE allocated resource in a Research request. If you can justify the need, please request this amount of SUs. There may be some limits based on supply and demand but that will be decided at the review meeting and the amount of SUs the sites like PSC will make available. PSC normally makes 127M SUs available on Bridges-2 RM per quarter.

What is the research allocation limit on Bridges-2 nodes?

I looked at the resource information page, https://portal.xsede.org/allocations/resource-info, but only the startup allocation limits are listed there. Are these limits the same for research allocations?

Hello Iana,

It is possible to extend an allocation, you will want to go to the XSEDE Allocation submission site:

https://portal.xsede.org/submit-request#/

there you should see your current allocation along with a blue Action button, select this and you should see the option for Extension.

Allocation end date extension

Hello everyone!

I have a question related to the allocation's expiration period. My research group is using the computational recourses on both Bridges and Expanse clusters. However, we will be not able to use all the recourses by the allocation deadline which is September 30. Is there a way to extend the allocation deadline period so we can continue using our recourses instead of writing a new allocation proposal?

Hi Vishwas,

Yes. Please note that the PI must be based in the U.S. and be an active member of the allocation (i.e. the PI can’t serve as a proxy for the grad student).

Section 8.6 of the Allocation Policies (found here: https://portal.xsede.org/allocations/policies#86) state: “XSEDE will not provide an allocation to a PI that does not have a substantive role in the project; that is the PI may not simply serve as a proxy for a foreign researcher.”

Thank you! That's a good idea. The last request I made was denied which was fine because the resources I needed fit well within the trial allocation.

I guess I would ideally like to keep within the trial allocation and renew as necessary but I get the sense that this is discouraged. But the projects I'm on don't seem to need more resources than that?

So I guess I will try to reapply when my trial is up and hopefully it will be approved.

Have you had a look at the XSEDE Allocations pages? Might want to begin with a Startup(https://portal.xsede.org/allocations/startup) where you can get access to all of the different XSEDE resources to test and benchmark codes to see which may be the best resource for you.

You will want to read over the XSEDE Allocations page about Research allocations:

https://portal.xsede.org/allocations/research

There you will want to look at the eligibility section and if you are eligible to be the PI then you can be the lead PI otherwise someone from your research group who is eligible can be the PI and you can be an Allocations Manager.

Hello,

I want to request for a Research Allocation. I am collaborating (as collaborator) in a research project by another PI. I will be conducting computational analysis in this project and would like to use XSEDE resources for this purpose.

I wanted to know what should I mention as my role, in the research allocation application.
Should I mention myself as "Allocation Manager", or PI or Co-PI.

Also, is it necessary to include the PI of the project, even if he/she doesn't actually use the XSEDE resources?

Choosing resource for large memory jobs?

Hi

We are in process of submitting a startup allocation grant and I would like to know which compute resource would be most suitable for our usage.

My work will involve:

Protein sequence property calculation: First, I'll calculate various sequence based properties in R for ~75k protein/mRNAs. Then, I'll calculate the pairwise correlation between all possible pairs of ~75k protein/mRNA. And, finally store them for use in developing prediction models. This step requires large amount of RAM because I need to store the entire ~75k * ~75k correlation matrix.
mRNA quantification using RNA-Seq: Process ~100 RNA-Seq datasets to quantify the expression of mRNA. Calculate pairwise correlation of all mRNA's for every RNA-Seq dataset. Store them for use in developing prediction models. RNA-Seq processing can be parallelized fairly easily and won't be very memory intensive. However, calculating and saving the correlation matrix requires a large amount of RAM.
Combine features: Each of the correlation score serves as a feature for my machine learning model and hence I join these scores to get a single file where each row is a protein/mRNA pair and the columns contains the correlation scores from sequence properties and RNA-Seq dataset.

Because the project involves steps which require multiple nodes (RNA-Seq processing) and large RAM (correlation calculation), I am wondering which resources would be best? I can then ask my PI to include those in our proposal.

Yes, you can request additional storage resources via a supplement.
I believe it only requires the PI CV and a Progress report that includes justification for your request.

The Startup allocation limit doesn't apply for educational awards on XStream. Please submit your proposal with the amount of SUs required for the class. 1 SU = 1 GPU hour on XStream.

Education allocation limits

I am interested in applying for an education allocation on Xstream (we will be using GPUs). I am wondering if the startup allocation limit also applies to the education allocation. I will have 15 students in the class, so if the allocation limit is 5,000 SUs, this only only allows around 300 SUs per student, and if they are using multiple GPUs, the total simulation time for the course will not be very long. Is it possible to request more than 5,000 SUs on Xstream for an educational allocation?

Request more storage space for a current allocation

Our group has an allocation on Comet now. The disk storage space on Oasis that came with this allocation is by default 500GB.
However, we are running some jobs that produces some large files, and we often run up the disk space so some running jobs were killed due to this reason.

I was wondering if it is possible to request more disk space, e.g. 1TB for our current allocation.
I knew there is an action "Supplement", but that looks like used for requesting more computational SUs and a lot of documents is needed.
